Google to Discard H.264 Support from Chrome

Chrome will support open video standards – WebM & VP8

With a belief of being open, Google quietly moves ahead by discarding anything that might hinder its progress in future. Mike Jazayeri, Product Manager for Chrome stated on Official Chromium Blog that “H.264 plays an important role in video, as our goal is to enable open innovation, support for the codec will be removed and our resources directed towards completely open codec technologies.”
Google has been promoting the usage of royalty free codecs for Chrome web browser ever since the announcement of WebM, a free and open video format codec for high quality video compression to be used with HTML5 video. Google aims to keep things open and hence has been promoting WebM (VP8) and Theora open video format for Google products since last year.
The H.264 is a video compression format that is widely supported amongst mobile devices, phones, Blu-ray Discs, DVD Players and several others. Despite offering several advantages, the promoters of open web standards advocate using more ‘open’ standard formats. That’s because the H.264 adopters have to pay patent royalties to the MPEG-LA licensing consortium. Now to overcome the entire patent-licensing issue, Google has acquired On2 technologies and has started the VP8 video compression project as an alternative to H.264.

Google Chrome will eventually drop H.264 support in the coming few months. Content publishers and web developers have been asked to use HTML5 Video tags in the site code in order to be ready. In order to comply with the H.264 drop and adopt WebM video, the content publishers and web developers will have to face additional challenges to reach wider audience on the web. Certain Google products already support WebM and the project’s FAQ states that support for the same will be prioritized for the remaining as well. We don’t think Google will ever drop support for H.264 for YouTube and Android. It would be too risky unless large number of content publishers and developers have embraced WebM entirely.
